Overtime Elite Battles Hostile Environment for Three More Wins

Overtime Elite stayed perfect early in their season, pushing their record to 12-0 after three more wins against Winston Salem Christian, Liberty Heights and Combine Academy on Tuesday night.

Jazian Gortman led Team Overtime with 21 points. In the third game for Team OTE, Matt Bewley matched Gortman with 21 points and added 16 rebounds in his team’s win over Combine Academy.

Ausar Thompson had a double-double finishing with 10 points and 16 rebounds. He also had seven blocks, five assists and two steals.

The video recaps of these games will be posted on OTE’s YouTube channel here, within 24 hours of tonight.

This wraps up Overtime Elite’s first road trip and they will now head back to Atlanta and get ready for their games next Tuesday, where they will play in their first league series games against each other.

Recaps of the games are below.

Team Overtime 88 vs. Winston Salem Christian 75

After a tight first quarter, Team Overtime picked up their defensive pressure in the second. They got out in transition leading to some easy buckets helping them build their first double-digit lead of the game. Jai Smith threw a dunk down right before the buzzer at half to put them up 43-34 at halftime.

In the third, Winston Salem Christian cut into the score a little bit, but a late run by Team Overtime pushed their lead back to 74-62 heading into the fourth quarter.

To start the fourth quarter, Team Overtime went on a quick 8-2 run to push their lead out to 18 forcing Winston Salem Christian to use a timeout. From there, they cruised to an 88-75 victory.

Team Elite 63 vs. Liberty Heights 61

Team Elite found themselves in a hole early trailing by double-digits in the first quarter.

Liberty Heights held onto that lead until mid third quarter when Team Elite took their first lead. Liberty Heights wouldn’t go away though retaking the lead briefly. With the clock winding down in the third, Ausar Thompson hit a three at the buzzer to put Team Elite up 45-42 going into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth, a pair of and ones by Bryce Griggs and Ausar Thompson pushed Team Elite out to a 53-50 lead with five minutes left. Just like earlier, Liberty Heights responded and tied things up. With time running down, Thompson got a steal on the last possession to push the game to overtime.

Following Overtime’s new rules for OT, the first to score four points wins the game. Liberty Heights struck first, putting Team Elite’s backs against the wall. They went down and got a bucket and then a huge stop setting up the final possession. Griggs brought the ball up the court and drove to the free throw line before putting the breaks on and hitting a walk-off, step back jumper.

Griggs finished with 13 points and five assists and none were bigger than the last two points.

Team OTE 92 vs. Combine Academy 85

In the final game of the night, Combine Academy came out swinging and built a lead. They held that lead into the second half, but Team OTE responded.

Stepping up their defense and hitting big shot after big shot, Team OTE came back and built a lead late behind some high flying dunks.

Both teams answered each other’s run with one of their own, but in the end it was Team OTE that was strongest and came out on top.

Matt Bewley led the way with 21 points and 16 rebounds. Six of the seven players that played finished with double-figure points and the seventh player had nine points.
